Question: Travel Restrictions 10

Posted by Robby Russell Sun, 10 Sep 2006 17:09:00 GMT

Travel restrictions?

When I purchased my tickets for my trip to London for RailsConf Europe through travelocity.com, it showed me the following warning (after I paid).

Traveling in the UK:

  • If you are traveling within the UK, you will have to check ALL of your belongings. Wallets, IDs, and necessary medications are the exceptions, and must be carried in a plastic bag (clear bags are recommended).
  • Laptops, mobile phones and iPods are among the electronic items banned in carry-on luggage on British flights.
  • Liquids, gels, and pastes are no longer permitted in carry-on luggage on board any aircraft within the U.S. and UK (This includes toothpaste, sunblock, and perfume.)
  • Please check our website for updates and the latest information.

So, I follow that link and come across this page, which doesn’t mention laptops, mobile phones, or iPods.

Does anybody know what the current restrictions are for flights to and from the US and UK?

The advice you quoted is out of date – it only applied for about 4 days several weeks back.

Here’s British Airway’s latest update and there’s a similar amount of info on BAA’s website (link on the right, looks like a banner add)

In short, you’re allowed less hand luggage than normal (1 small bag) on flights departing from the UK, and you’re not allowed to carry any liquids or gels on any flight to or from the US. But laptops, ipods, cameras etc are fine – I flew to the states and back a week ago with all three and it was fine.

    Paul,

    Thanks for the information.

What qualifies as one small bag? An average timbuk2 bag seem reasonable for carrying on?

I flew to Copenhagen from Buenos Aires via London a week ago and was able to bring my Crumpler backpack with me. I have the one large enough for a 17” powerbook. I was truely worried if they would allow it, but they did. I managed to squeeze it into one of those sizer cages they’ve got.

The official maximum size is 17.7” by 13.7” by 6.2”. Most laptop bags should fit within that.

I know you do not have to do that when you travel to the UK from the UAE but on the UK departure last week they were still restricting carry one of some items

    Robby,

What airline are you flying? I found something on Virgin Atlantic that prohibits Dell and Apple laptops with batteries in them (you can use them sans battery). See you in London!

    Cheers, Christian

Hope this helps. I saw this in the Stansted Airport’s website but I think it’s the same for all UK airports.

I am flying America Airlines to Chicago… then to London. Flying Virgin from London to New York.

I’m on Virgin Atlantic roundtrip from Miami. I’ll be getting in around 8:30 local time tomorrow.

My partner received and paid a fine for a dwi in 1985. He was not a resident of that state, paid the fine and left. He did not take the alcohol awareness program and cannot drive in that state. He recently applied for a transfer of his drivers’ license and a blurp showed up on the computer screen. The state did not explain the blurp. He called and they explained the situation. Although the problem is not recreprocal with any other stae, it still shows up on the nationwide computer. He is trying to arrange a schedule to take the alcohol awareness program. He has scheduled a trip to Europe. Will Home Land Security deny him this trip at the airpport. He doesn’t have enough time to take the classes before the scheduled departure. Is there a temporary solution to this problem? Will he be denied at the airport? Thank You
