Poke My Brain 2

Posted by Robby Russell Mon, 12 Feb 2007 07:42:00 GMT

I’m working on a few blog articles that I’ll be posting over the next few weeks. The other day, I got another email from someone that asked me if I would write about something that I mentioned briefly in a blog post. This got me thinking… perhaps there are things that you’d like me write something on? In general, I try to keep a broad range of topics that relate to Ruby/Rails circulating and I’m planning a major overhaul to my blog (switch to mephisto in the near future?) and working on more tutorials, especially as we near the release of my book as a O’Reilly Rough Cut… and when it finally makes it to print. :-)

If there is something that you’d like to learn more about (Rails, business, agile…), feel free to drop an email to suggestions@robbyonrails.com.

What? Are you asking because you’re out of ideas? :-p

Actually, I have some questions about how you started a consulting company and how you pitch Rails to potential clients. You’ve been doing this for a few years, so you must have some advice to offer us newcomers. I’ll definitely send an email later.

    John,

Yes, please send an email. I’ll answer one of your questions now. These are likely to be similar to the sorts of questions that I expect to hear at RailsConf 2007, where I will be on a panel of people who are running businesses that work almost exclusively with Ruby on Rails. Are you going to make it to Portland?

how you started a consulting company

I started the company when we were focused on PHP and PostgreSQL consulting. I got the consulting bug when I worked at my previous employer, which might shed any light onto my love affair with PostgreSQL. I really enjoyed the client interaction… mainly focused on helping people and companies solve problems. The Ruby and Rails phenomena came at a time when I was releasing our commercial product (pgCart ...RIP), which was my last PHP project thanks to finding Rails. :-)

    That’s all for now…

Share your thoughts... (really...I want to hear them)
