Campfire messages in Growl 9
Our team has slowly been transitioning from IRC to Campfire (iPhone interface helped with this decision) for internal team discussions. Earlier today, I decided to setup Campfire to connect to Growl. There are a few scripts to do this, but I figured that I’d consolidate the steps here for my teammates and share with everyone else in the process.
Step 1: Get stuff installed
You’ll need to install the following programs on OSX.
- Growl (install and run it)
- Fluid.app (run a web site in it’s own desktop app)
- Follow instructions on their homepage (requires restart of Safari)
Step 2: Setup Campfire
Once you have everything installed, you can go ahead and create your Campfire Fluid application. You’ll need to provide your Campfire URL and a name for the application.
Once you get it running, you should be able to run your Campfire application in it’s own window.
Step 3: Install the Campfire Growl script for GreaseKit
Next, you’ll want to install this script, created by Tim Harper, on userscripts.org within your Campfire Fluid.app instance.
Under the Userscripts menu, you’ll see: Browse Userscripts.org.
Find your way to the script (search for: “Campfire Growl”) to find and install the script.
Once it installs, you’ll then need to activate it in the Fluid applications management interface. Within Campfire application, go to Userscripts > Manage Userscripts.
Then activate it like so:
..and that’s it! When you’re not focused on Campfire… you should see Growl notifications when other people are talking in the active room.

I was flattered, and surprised, to see someone blog about my growl script for campfire. I’m glad you’re getting value out of it :)
I really like images and screenshots you’ve made to clarify things.
One thing I’d like to point out, is it’s no longer necessary to install GreaseKit or SIMBL, as the GreaseKit code has been merged into Fluid.
Thanks!
Tim
We’re quite pleased with Pyro at the moment. It also integrates nicely with Growl and the Dock. You can get it at http://www.karppinen.fi/pyro/
We also moved from IRC to Campfire not too long ago – it’s well worth it.
I use Pyro. Works pretty well apart from the occasional crash.
I have been contemplating whether or not I will be switching to Campfire. Your post is an encouragement especially because you have step by step details.
I’ll second Menno and Martin on Pyro. Why go through all the hassle when it works so nicely?
Pyro always crashes when “leaving” a room, so the workaround was to just quit the app, leaving your “ghost” in the chat.
I switched to Fluid because of this, and now I run 3 or 4 different Fluid SSBs every day. It’s a game-changer…
Pyro has been a fantastic product, and I’m grateful to Marko Karppinen for creating it. If it still serves your needs, keep using pyro.
If you’d like some slightly-more helpful growl messages, use Fluid and the Growl-script on userscripts.org
I installed Fluid on my Mac OS X. When I double click the globe icon for Fluid, it jumped once. Nothing else happened. I have no way to type in my campfirenow address. Can anybody help me with this issue? Thanks in advance.
FYI: I already have the Gmail growl notifier up running in my machine before installing Fluid.
Yeah pyro doesn’t have growl messages, so you’ll have to be listening constantly for its quiet audio notifications of chat messages. Ugh.
