Rolling out new updates for Rails Boxcar

Alex, Director of Deployment Services, has been hard at work helping us get our new suite of hosting plans out for Rails Boxcar, a deployment environment that we’ve designed to help you get your Ruby on Rails applications running as painless and quickly as possible. With this new announcement, we’ve rebuilt the Boxcar image based on the feedback of our existing customers.
Additionally, we’ve been looking over some of early results from the Ruby on Rails Hosting in 2009 Survey that we’ve been running the past few weeks, which has further boosted our confidence that we’re on the right track with this big change.
What are some of the changes?
- Moving to Ruby Enterprise Edition (REE)
- Moving to Passenger (mod_rails) by default
- All-new pricing structure! (starting at $35/month)
This means that with a Rails Boxcar, you can now get a pre-configured deployment environment using some of the most efficient platforms for hosting your Ruby on Rails applications. (REE has shown to increase performance by 33% in some cases)

I just decided to go with slicehost. I don’t know if the $35 cost for a Rails Boxcar preconfigured VPS is really worth the extra $15 bucks. How is boxcar going to attract people when with slicehost you have many articles at your disposal to get anything running on your own. There articles handhold you through the whole setup which is worth more than them setting it up for you.
I think its awesome you offer hosting, but Im saying, how are you going to bring the Thunder for your hosting package? Only way I’d switch over was if the package came with a staging server because I could purchase two slices and it’d be only $5 more than your package.
Whats the spin that makes this worth the $35 bucks?

It’s all relative. The time that you’re spending learning how to setup your own VPS is definitely worth exploring if you have the time and energy. If you want to be a sysadmin, then by all means, don’t let us stop you. :-)
For us, we are creating a set of conventions for our clients so that they can focus more of their energy on the development and ongoing maintenance of their Ruby on Rails applications. I’d estimate that a large majority of our Boxcar customers are referred by their developers so that their customers can send support requests to us instead of them should their application be down for whatever reason. We’re able to help facilitate getting the application back up and running as we understand the environment (because we’ve designed it).
While it might be an additional $15/month, the cost is nominal as our setup can save several hours of your time so that you can focus on billable time.
