It says starts as low as $75/month and I assume that they are having people prepay 6 or 12 months to get those prices. I charge that much per hour for development. This might be a much better solution than having my clients put their business applications on slower hosts like Site5 and Dreamhost, which cost more but you get what you pay for.

Robby is right on about developers not being inclined to manage a server.

If I wanted to manage servers I would be a SysAdmin instead of a Programmer.

As a Programmer it’s obviously important to know at least some things about what you’re deploying to, but you already have enough to handle with your Programming than having to worry about SysAdmin, too.

I’d rather pay someone to worry about SysAdmin stuff and spend more time programming!

One of my clients signed up with TextDrive for a lifetime subscription and after six months they ended up moving to a VPS solution due to the horrible support quality and constant outages. I have a standard hosting account with Planet Argon and am thinking about trying this new service out. If it works for me than I can refer my clients to host with them. :-)

You guys sound like you know what you’re doing when it comes to Rails hosting, but I still think lifetime hosting sounds like a better investment in the long run. I could be completely wrong though. ;o)

I won’t be availing myself of this yet, as I’m a Java Developer professionally and don’t run my own business. However, I think this is good news. Robby is right. I’ve tried setting up Ruby on Rails with FastCGI / Lighttpd, etc. It’s not trivial. It’s far from trivial. So getting it installed and getting it installed right is a service worth paying for. Not to mention backups, etc.
