Speaking at Ostrava on Rails

I have been invited to speak at Ostrava on Rails in the Czech Republic this June. I hear that Jamis Buck and Geoffrey Grosenbach will also be speaking at this event. Once a few minor details are set, I’ll post more information about the talk that I am giving, which will related to the Business of Rails panel, which is where you see me speak in just a few weeks at RailsConf 2007 (Portland, OR).

If you’re going to be at the conference in Ostrava, let me know. I’m thinking that I’ll also try to visit Prague before or after the event… as I’ve seen and heard great things about both cities. I believe my lodging in Ostrava will be decided by the powers that be… but if you have any pointers as to where to stay while in Prague, let me know. :-)

In California, for Rails Seminar

Sitting in my hotel room in downtown San Francisco, CA. Mr. London himself, James Adam (of Rails Engine fame)... and I have been spending some time wandering around the area, which is where I grew up. We ventured over to Berkeley and down the coast to Santa Cruz yesterday. :-)

We then took the Cable Car late last night…

...and had food with almost too much garlic.

Today, we’re heading down to Santa Clara, CA to check-in at AjaxWorld Conference and Expo, where we will both be speaking tomorrow at their Ruby on Rails seminar.

Congrats to Steven Baker…who got married this weekend?! He’ll be meeting us in Santa Clara later and speaking tomorrow as well.

If you’re going to be at the conference, be sure to introduce yourself. :-)

Injecting Rails into your Legacy World

Many of you know that I have an unhealthy obsession with databases… in particular legacy databases. I’m not the only one it seems. :-)

I’m hoping to compile a few stories of how Rails enthusiasts have been able to take advantage of the Ruby on Rails framework within a Legacy environment, whether that be to talk with legacy databases, web services, or a piece of cauliflower. If you have a story (good or bad) of how you used Rails with a legacy system, please email me and let’s talk. :-)

Also, I would like to announce that I have started a new google group that focuses on the topic of using Rails with legacy environments. Check out the new Rails and Legacy group.

If you’re down in California, you can see my talk, “Rails meets the Legacy World” at the Ruby on Rails Seminar, which is being hosted at the AJAXWorld Conference & Expo.

Speaking at Ruby on Rails Seminar in October

It must be summer and I must be busy as I haven’t been posting much of anything on my blog over the past two months. Please forgive me! :-)

Just a quick mention that I’ve been invited to speak at the Ruby on Rails Seminar, to be held on Tuesday, October 3, colocated with the AJAXWorld Conference & Expo, October 2-4, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA.

I’ll be presenting a new talk with an oh-so-familiar topic… Rails meets the Legacy-World. It’ll be nice to get to share the stage with some of my favorite Rails colleagues… such as Steven Baker, Joe O’Brien, and Michael Buffington.

For more information on the event, visit http://www.rubyonrailsseminar.com.

A tough decision

Due to some fairly complex personal issues that have surfaced in the past week or so, I finally decided that I needed to cut back on a few of my professional engagements. This morning I made the decision that I will not be able to speak at RailsConf. I’m still going and plan to have a blast but I haven’t had the mental capacity all week to finish preparing for the talk and it was causing me quite a bit of stress. We all have our limits and I decided to side with personal sanity. :-)

Chad said they’ll make it work out and I’ll be more than happy to talk about legacy integration with Ruby on Rails while at the conference.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m human and can’t work like a robot. ;-)

Canada on Rails: 50 seats left?

I just heard from Nathaniel Brown that there are only 50 seats left for Canada on Rails! Both Jeremy and I will be speaking there… and if you were not able to get tickets to RailsConf 2006 to see us speak… then you should head up to Canada.

I hope to see you there… :-)

Register Now!

Speaking at RailsConf 2006

While talking to a client in our office this afternoon… I glanced at my email and it seems that I got accepted to speak at RailsConf 2006! About ten minutes later… Jeremy said that he also got accepted to speak at RailsConf!

We’re also speaking next month at Canada on Rails. :-)

The title of my talk is… “Sneaking Rails through the (legacy) System.”

How are we getting there? By train of course!
